S ciljem ostvarenja klimatski neutralnog kontinenta do 2050. godine, na nivou Evropske unije (EU) se u znatnoj mjeri radi na poboljšanju energijske efikasnosti, većoj upotrebi obnovljivih izvora energije te na smanjenju emisije stakleničkih plinova. Tako je sredinom 2021. godine Evropska komisija predstavlila paket mjera “Spremni za 55” (“Fit for 55”) koji sadrži 13 zakonskih prijedloga za smanjenje emisija ugljika za najmanje 55% do 2030.
edan od prijedloga je Mehanizam za graničnu prilagodbu emisija ugljika (CBAM) kojim bi se uvelo plaćanje cijene za ugljik prilikom uvoza određenih proizvoda iz zemalja koje nisu članice EU, a čija proizvodnja se vrši uz ispuštanje velikih emisija ugljika.
